2012 Audi A7

2012 Audi A7 Sportback
2012 Audi A7 SportbackAudi claims that one small strip (1.2 inches wide, 0.08 inch thick) of the high-strength, lightweight, hot-shaped steel used in much of the new A7 Sportback's body is so strong that it could suspend five A7s, each one roughly 4000 pounds. That's one strong bookmark. Arguably more noteworthy than the super steel is the fact that feathery aluminum makes up nearly 20 percent of the Sportback's bod, including the hood, hatch, doors, and front fenders, resulting in a relatively light curb weight. A BMW 535i xDrive GT, in comparison, tips the scales with about 700 extra pounds.

2012 hummer h4

2012 hummer h4

With GM making plans to discontinue the Hummer Brand Name and every automaker killing their SUV line up there is still a large amount of us that want more. According to J. D. Power and Associates, the Hummer brand captures and retains owners better than most, so it’s worth nurturing. The trick is making hugeness less of a calling card – a process that started with the demise of the H1 – but preserving extreme off-road ability.

2012 hummer h4

As anyone who has done any serious off-roading can attest, size is your enemy on the trail, so a smaller but still off-road-ready Hummer, perhaps like the HX concept makes perfect sense. The HX gives us a good look at the upcoming H4, and if that new entry has all the off-road gear of the show car, it’ll be a strong addition to the lineup. The HX sports full-time four-wheel drive with locking front and rear differentials, 35-inch tires, a 3.6-liter direct-injected V-6, and an electronically disconnectable front antiroll bar – not to mention that unmistakable blocky styling. I think it will be a big hit not just in the U.S. market.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco
Chevrolet announced it will launch the Eco version of its new Malibu first, then will launch conventional 2.5-liter models. Both go on sale in the first quarter of 2012 as '13 models. While conventional Malibus get the new 2.5-liter four, the Eco, like Buick's Regal and LaCrosse with eAssist, continue with the 2.4-liter four, coupled to a mild hybrid system with a lithium-ion battery. Chevy expects 26/38 mpg fuel mileage, which is 1 mpg better on the highway cycle compared with the similar Buick Regal, thanks to better aerodynamics

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco
The Malibu Eco has active grill shutters, but little else to distinguish it from the Malibu LS, LT and LTZ. It's "Chevrolet's most efficient midsize sedan, ever," says GM North American President Mark Reuss. The Malibu Eco's highway mileage will exceed that of the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima hybrid at 35 mpg, and the Ford Fusion hybrid at 36 mpg, though those full hybrids get better city mileage, at 31 mpg and 41 mpg, respectively.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco
Hopefully this time around, Chevy will get a warmer reception for the Eco, as the first-generation Malibu Hybrid failed to sell in significant numbers. A major reason was because of its minimal fuel economy advantage over the standard four-cylinder model with the 6-speed automatic, eking out a mere 2 miles per gallon better in the city, with no change in highway mpg. Compared to its predecessor, the Eco gets 2 mpg better in the city, and a significant 6 mpg better on the highway.

2012 Hyundai Accent

2012 Hyundai Accent
A long-neglected segment in the U.S. market, the subcompact scene has suddenly gotten very interesting. First came Honda's second-generation Fit, which set the bar for the other contenders. Then, Ford's Euro-cutie 2011 Fiesta made its stateside debut, followed shortly thereafter by its distant cousin, the Mazda2. All along, Hyundai's Accent soldiered on as competent, if somewhat unremarkable, contender in the segment. Its competitiveness in the U.S. market was also hampered by the lack of a five-door configuration.
Now that Hyundai has finally gained respectability with consumers and critics with such models as the Genesis, Equus, Sonata, and new Elantra, the automaker is looking to dominate the subcompact segment with its all-new 2012 Hyundai Accent. No longer an also-ran, second-tier competitor, the new Accent has upped its game substantially. In equipment, style, and pricing, it poses the most serious and credible threat to the Fiesta and Fit to date. The one casualty of this re-imagining is the three-door hatch. In fact, the only three-door models in the segment are a version of the Toyota Yaris and Fiat's recently introduced 500 subcompact, which isn't offered in any other style.
So what's there to get excited about with Hyundai's new entry-level offering? Try the segment's only direct-injected engine, which also now happens to be the most powerful, at 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque. That bests the next-most-powerful Fiesta by 18 horsepower and 11 lb-ft. The 1.6 liter DOHC engine also features dual continuously variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust camshafts. With all this technological wizardry, the Accent still manages a segment-leading 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. True, certain trims of the Fiesta manage the big 4-0 on the highway, buy Hyundai is proud of and quick to point out that the Accent's fuel economy ratings apply across the board, regardless of body style, transmission, or trim level.
Speaking of transmissions, it's six speeds for everyone, whether you're of the shift-it-yourself or slushbox persuasion. Automatic models also include an Active Eco button that further optimizes fuel efficiency up to 7 percent in real-world driving, Hyundai claims. However, the fuel frugality in this mode usually comes at the expense of throttle response and overall driving enjoyment.
